While many locals claim that the rat hole has been a neighborhood fixture for several years, it recently gained widespread attention when Winslow Dumaine shared a snapshot on social media with the caption, “Had to make a pilgrimage to the Chicago Rat Hole.” The post has since gone viral, amassing over 4 million views and attracting curious visitors to the site.
Situated in front of a distinct blond brick three-flat building at 1918 W. Roscoe St., the rat hole has sparked speculation about its origin. Some believe it to be the imprint of a deceased squirrel rather than an actual rat.
